The EBU reference group are meeting in Helsinki this weekend. The head producer of Eurovision, Svante Stockselius says there might be a record 40 countries competing in Helsinki. He would not speculate though, which new countries might have shown interest in entering and which countries might be returning to the contest. 40 is the maximum number of participants according to current Eurovision rules. The rules of the ESC 2007 will be sent to member broadcasters next week and they have until the end of this year to decide on their participation. Only then will we know with certainty the number of countries, said Mr. Stockselius in Helsinki. The reference group is reported to be happy with YLEs arrangements so far. The chairman of the eight-man group, Ruurd Bierman from the Netherlands even said the host broadcaster was ahead of the schedule. Mr. Stockselius praised the venue, Hartwall Areena, also known more neutrally as Helsinki Arena, saying it was a perfect choice to stage Eurovision. It is a modern venue, and is suitable for hosting a brilliant show. The venue is not too small nor too big, and I am sure the atmosphere there will be perfect next year, he said. He told YLE Swedish language TV news further, that the sponsor situation is very good ahead of next year. Ticket sales for next years final will start around Christmas. The theme of Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki will be decided in the coming weeks. Source: YLE |
